KINETICS AND MECHANISM OF ZnCl2 CATALYSED OXIDATION OF ORGANIC SULFOXIDES BY PERMANGANATE IN NON- AQUEOUS MEDIUM
نویسنده
چکیده
The rates and mechanism of zinc chloride (Lewis acid) catalysed oxidation of several organic sulfoxides by permanganate have been studied in anhydrous acetone solutions. The kinetic rate law obtained indicates that a complex between permanganate and the Lewis acid (ZnCl2) is formed before oxidation of the sulfoxides occurs. The function of the zinc chloride is to enhance the reactivity of permanganate. A Hammett ρ value of -2.1 8 ± 0.09 is obtained for the oxidation of sulfoxides at 23.0 0 C. A negative ρ value means that the sulfur is electron deficient in the transition state. Values for the HOMO energies of sulfoxides and the LUMO energies for permanganate ion and the permanganate-zinc chloride complex have been calculated. The results indicate that electron donating substituents on the ring increase the rate of the reaction and electron withdrawing groups slow down the reaction.

Kinetics and Mechanism of ZnCl2 Catalyzed Oxidation of Organic Sulfides by Permanganate in Non-Aqueous Medium
The rates of zinc chloride (Lewis acid) catalysed oxidation of thioanisole and several para-substituted thioanisoles by permanganate have been studied in anhydrous acetone solutions. The kinetic rate law obtained indicates that a complex between permanganate and the Lewis acid (ZnCl2) is formed before oxidation of the sulfur-containing compounds occurs. متن کاملKinetics and mechanism of the reaction of lysine with permanganate ion at different ionic strengths and temperatures
The kinetics of Mn(VII) oxidation of lysine in moderately sulfuric acid solutions was studiedspectrophotometrically in the presence and absence of Mn(II) as catalyst. The reaction was arrangedto be under pseudo first-order condition with respect to Mn(VII). The results showed that the pseudofirst-order rate constant increases with increasing [H2SO4], [(Mn)II], and [lysine]. The dependence ofthe...
متن کاملOxidation of levofloxacin by acidic permanganate: a kinetic and mechanistic study
The kinetic and mechanistic investigation of oxidation of levofloxacin (LF) has been studied by permanganate ion in aqueous sulphuric acid medium at 25°C. The reaction followed first-order kinetics with respect to [LF], and [H+] in their lower concentrations range, tending to zero-order at their higher concentrations. The effect of added products and dielectric constant of the medium was studie...
متن کاملKinetics and mechanism of the methylene blue-permanganate ion reaction in acidic medium
The kinetics of the oxidation of methylene blue by permanganate ion has been studied in aqueous acidic medium. The rate of the reaction was found to be acid dependent and first order in both oxidant and reductant. The emprical rate law conforms to the equation: ‘a’ = 4.04 x10 dm mol s and ‘b’ = 0.125 dm mol s: at [H] = 1 x 10 mol dm, μ= 0.25 mol dm (Na2SO4), λmax = 660 nm and T = 24 ± 1.0°C. Th...
متن کاملKinetic, mechanistic and thermodynamic investigations on Iridium (III) catalyzed oxidation of D-Mannitol by N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide in perchloric acid medium
The present paper deals with the kinetics and mechanism of homogeneously Ir(III) chloride catalyzed oxidation of D-mannitol by chloramine-T [CAT] in perchloric acid medium in the temperature range of 30 to 45 0C. The reaction is carried out in the presence of mercuric acetate as a scavenger for chloride ion. The experimental results show first order kinetics with respect to the oxidant [CAT] an...
